No. 1 Northwest Florida State College Beats Women’s Basketball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Santa Fe College Women's Basketball knew it had a stiff challenge on Saturday afternoon against unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Northwest Florida State College, and although the Saints came ready to compete, the Raiders proved to be too much in a 76-48 win inside the SF Gymnasium.
First Quarter – NWF 27, SF 21
Aleisha Curry had the game's first points, converting off a pass from Taniah Bowers.
After the Raiders proceeded to score seven straight points, the Saints regained a lead, 12-11, after Bowers made two free-throws at the quarter's midway point.
The Saints were playing well, and trailed by just one, 22-21, with 1:05 remaining.
The Raiders concluded the frame with the last five points, however, and led by six.
Aleisha Curry had ten points in the quarter to lead the Saints, having her way inside.
Second Quarter – NWF 42, SF 31
The Saints cut their deficit to five points on three separate occasions, then four on a basket from Curry that brought the score to 35-31 with 2:43 remaining.
Once again though, the top-ranked Raiders finished the quarter well, producing the final seven points to open up their biggest lead of the game at the break.
Third Quarter – NWF 64, SF 40
The Raiders took firm control in the third quarter, outscoring SF 22-9.
NWF outpaced the Saints 20-3 over the final 7:23 of the third quarter, as the Saints went cold from the field (3-of-10) in the quarter and turned the ball over on eight occasions.
Fourth Quarter – NWF 76, SF 48
The Raiders defense continued to contain the Saints in the final quarter, and the guests went on for the 76-48 result to remain unbeaten.
Key Statistics
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Saints.
SF shot well from the free-throw line when it made it there, going 11-of-14.
The rebounding category was a close one, with Northwest Florida holding a narrow 41-40 edge.
Curry, the reigning NJCAA Player of the Week, finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Saints in each category.
Olivia Smith added 11 points and six rebounds, while Malea Brown had ten points.
