GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Aleisha Curry of Santa Fe College Women's Basketball, a two-time FCSAA All-State/NJCAA All-Region 8 selection for the Saints, has signed to attend Valdosta State University to compete for the Blazers.
In 2019-2020 as a true freshman, the center from Lehigh Acres, Fla. and Lehigh High School was honored as an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American and named the Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year.
After suffering an inury to sideline her for the 2020-2021 season, Curry returned as a sophomore in 2021-2022 to average a double-double with 13.8 points per game and team-highs in rebounds per game (10.2), blocks per game (1.2), and field goal percentage (52.9).
The dominant post player was just one of two players in Region 8 to average a double-double. She compiled 12 double-doubles on the season while ranking No. 3 in the FCSAA in rebounding average and No. 19 in the NJCAA (10.2).
Curry evidenced a knack for the ball to create second-chance opportunities. This past season she ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA in offensive rebounds per game (6.2), and in her Saints career, Curry ranks No. 1 in program history in offensive rebounds (349) and No. 4 in total rebounds (534).
Her play in 2021-2022 helped her nab three FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week Awards and two NJCAA Player of the Week awards, and she will be bringing plenty of potential for more accomplishments as she begins her education and playing career at Valdosta State.
Valdosta State University Women's Basketball is coached by Deandra Schirmer, who recently completed her third season at the helm of the successful NCAA Division II program. Schirmer, who was the 2020-2021 Gulf South Conference East Division Coach of the Year, helped guide the Blazers to the NCAA Elite Eight Quarterfinal in 2021-2022, finishing with a 26-6 record and a final ranking of No. 5 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and No. 6 in the final WBCA Top-25.
Curry is now the first women's basketball signing to be announced on santafesaints.com, and the second Saint this year to head to Valdosta State, joining Story Giebeig of Santa Fe Softball.
