Fort Pierce, FL-
The Santa Fe College Women's Basketball team (10-10) traveled down to Fort Pierce in a match against the 13-8 Indian River State College Pioneers. Leyah Houston and Shakiria Chaney came up big helping to boost the Saints to victory.
How It Happened
The Saints took command early with a 10-0 run against The River. Khaleah Douglas started the game two for two from the field with an impressive and one play to the bucket and later a made three pointer. Joey Delancy followed her lead with a driving layup that also drew a foul and she delivered on the free throw to help contribute to the 10-0 run for the Saints. Indian River got back into the game with a couple of quick makes and the two teams battled it out for the rest of the first and quarter. Indian River went up briefly with a few minutes to go in the second quarter but the Saints made a couple key buckets and settled the score at 32-32 going into the half. The Saints returned from intermission and had a similar run as they did to start the game this time a 9-0 run. Chaney, Houston, and Delancy each contributed a bucket to start the third quarter but Douglas led the way with twelve third quarter points. The River made another comeback of their own with a 7-0 run early in the third quarter, but after that it was all Saints. The Saints were stingy on defense and gave up only nine points in the third quarter forcing missed shots and turnovers.
Leyah Houston had a career night scoring 21 points and collecting 16 rebounds with 12 of those on the defensive end. The River seemed to have no answer for the aggressive attack of the Saints. Shakiria Chaney, Joey Delancy, Khaleah Douglas, and Houston all scored going downhill at the bucket which resulted in the Saints making 29 trips to the foul line. Over a third of those attempts came in the Saints 20 to 17 big fourth quarter. For the game, the Saints were led by Houston's big night, as well as Chaney who had 23 points of her own to go with eight rebounds and four steals.
The Saints will now have a rare off week until their next game versus Daytona State College on February 10th in Daytona. The Saints are now 11-10 on the year and 6-7 in the Citrus Conference; they are sandwiched between Hillsborough who is half a game up on the Saints and in front of Daytona who the Saints lead by half a game. With essentially one round to go in conference the Saints will look to move up in the Citrus Conference and earn a state bid.
Quote From Coach Jackson
"The young ladies bought in completely on the defensive side of the floor for 40 minutes. I'm hoping that this game will be the proof that we need that if we lock in we can see the desired outcomes that we're seeking."
