
Tough Loss At Home For The Saints
Gainesville, FL- On Thursday, the Saints faced off against Florida Southwestern State College at home. It was a hard-fought game that included tough defensive play by both teams. Offensively both teams came alive in the fourth quarter. In the end, the Bucs came out on top with a final score of 67-64.
How It Happened
In the first quarter, the Saints would strike first taking a 5-2 lead to start the game. This was made possible by a steal from Khaleah Douglas. The Bucs then went on a 9-0 run to take the lead 11-5.
The Saints went 4-4 from the free throw line helping them to cut into the lead. The score was 11-13 (Bucs) at the end of the period.
In the second quarter, Aissatou Diallo sparked the Saints offense by hitting a triple followed by a steal and layup tying the score at 26-26. Khaleah Douglas made two free throws putting the Saints ahead 28-26.
Shakiria Chaney led the offense for the Saints in the second half scoring 16 of her 20 points. Leyah Houston contributed 15 points and Khaleah Douglas added another 11 points.
Ashley Lester led the way for the Bucs scoring 14 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter. Sarah Owona scored 11 points on the day.
Down the stretch the teams went back and forth scoring baskets. The Bucs caused a crucial turnover with 7 seconds remaining in the game forcing the Saints to commit another foul putting the Bucs back on the free throw line. This put the Bucs up by two points 66-64 after splitting the free throws. They would go on to rebound the missed free-throw forcing the Saints to commit another quick foul.
Federica Lagana would go 1-2 from the free throw line putting the score at 67-64 with under three seconds remaining. The Saints were unable to convert on a long three-point attempt from half court with time running out. The Bucs held on to win with a final score of 67-64.
