Titans Defeat Saints
Gainesville, FL. – On Wednesday February 28th, the Saints women's basketball team took on the St. Petersburg College Titans at home. The Saints lost the game with a final score of 76-67. The Saints record progresses to 13-14.
How It Happened
In the first quarter, the Saints put the first point on the board when Shakiria Chaney had a defensive rebound and made one of two free throws after being fouled. The Titans came storming back. At the first media timeout, the Titans possessed the lead 13-5.
With 3:25 remaining in the first quarter, Shakiria Chaney sunk a three pointer to reduce the score deficit. Leading scorers for the Saints during the first quarter were Khaleah Douglas (4) and Chaney (4). Leading scorers for the Titans during the first quarter were Aniyah Ruddock (9) and Mia Lake (6). At the end of the first quarter, the Saints trailed 23-9.
During the second quarter, Chaney was fouled with under eight minutes to go and made both of her free throws diminishing the score gap to 24-14. This was followed by two from Joey Delancy and three from Khaleah Douglas (27-19 Titans). Aissatou Diallo was then fouled and made both of her throws; the score was the closest it had been all game with only a six-point difference. With under five minutes left in the quarter, Delancy hit a three-pointer followed by another two. With a minute and a half left in the second, Chaney made another two pointer (36-30 Titans). Leading scorers for the Saints during the second quarter were Joey Delancy (7) and Shakiria Chaney (5). Leading scorers for the Titans during the second quarter were Carliss Johnson (3) and Aniyah Ruddock (7). At the end of the first half, the score was 39-32 (Titans).
In the third quarter, Leyah Houston scored first for the Saints with a two pointer. With 6:19 remaining in the quarter, Chaney made another two-pointer followed by a three pointer from Khaleah Douglas (45-39). Leading scorers for the Saints during the third quarter were Chaney (6) and Douglas (5). The leading scorer for the Titans was Aniyah Ruddock who scored 11 points and made three consecutive triples in a row. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 59-47, with the Titans holding the lead.
During the fourth quarter, Khaleah Douglas started the Saints off strong with a three pointer that was immediately followed by a two pointer. With 2:27 left in the game, the Titans were up by ten (70-60). Chaney scored two but was fouled on her way to the basket and made the free throw to complete the three-point play reducing the deficit to 70-63. The Saints were down by nine points with just over a minute left in the game. Chaney went back to the line after being fouled. She converted on both free-throws. Khaleah Douglas then had an offensive rebound which allowed Chaney to score three (72-67 Titans). Ultimately, the Saints were unable to comeback from their deficit and thus were defeated by the Titans. The final score was 76-67.
