NJCAA #3 Gulf Coast Overpowered Saints in FCSAA Region 8 Tournament
Niceville, FL- The Saints had their hands full in game three of the FCSAA Region VIII as they matched up against the nations number three team and the number seed Gulf Coast State College Commodores. The Saints had a slow start and were down by eleven to start the game after a Commodore banked in three. The Saints slow start had them shooting 14% from the field with Gulf Coast shooting 56% from the field the first five minutes. Down 11-27 after the first quarter the Saints regrouped and outscored the Commodore 25-18 in the second quarter to close the margin to nine points at half. The Saints had 11 first half turnovers and were outrebounded by only by four despite the slow start.
The third quarter started much the same as the first and Gulf Coast extended their lead to twenty quickly. The Saints struggled from three point range making less than 15% of their three attempts and the Commodores shot over 31% from the same line.
The high point for the Saints was a strong outing by Leyah Houston who had 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Saints also shot 13 for 16 from free throw line. In addition, Santa Fe ended the game at a 41-41 tie in the rebounding margin to a much taller Gulf Coast team. The low point for the Saints was that the Commodores forced them into 31 turnovers so they only had 55 attempted shots to Gulf Coast's 71. The final score was 55-89.
