Volleyball Prevails in Five-Set Thriller on Sophomore Night, 3-2 over Indian River
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – What a night it was for Santa Fe College Volleyball, as the Saints outlasted Indian River State College in five sets on Sophomore Night and NJCAA Day, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 15-9.
Each of the two matches this season between the Saints and the Pioneers went the distance, and this one inside the SF Gymnasium evened the season-series in thrilling fashion. SF earned their first Suncoast Conference victory in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-3 in Set 1, the Saints went on an 8-0 run on the serve of Christina Killingsworth to take an 11-5 lead.
SF grew their lead to 19-10, forcing an Indian River timeout. Whatever was discussed amongst the Pioneers paid dividends, and IRSC went on a 10-1 run to tie it up at 20-20. It happened in a flash, and the guests came all the way back to go in front 1-0.
IRSC raced out to a 6-1 lead in Set 2, but the match continued to feature several significant changes in momentum, and the Saints tied it at 7-7 with a 6-1 run of their own.
SF led 18-17 later in the frame and tied the match at a set apiece by winning seven of the final nine points. Keionna Mackey and Katelyn Crofts led the way with an efficient attack.
An 8-0 spurt from the Saints established a 10-5 lead, and the hosts didn't let this lead get away, leading the remainder of Set 3. A Paige Dinges kill accounted for the final blow, and SF was a set away from victory.
Set 4 was tied at 15-15 before three unanswered points from the Pioneers. Santa Fe drew to within a single point, 22-21, but IRSC forced a fifth and decisive set.
Leading 8-7, a spurt of four consecutive points from SF created a cushion they needed to preserve the win. Katie Netzel had two aces during the stretch of play, and the final three points down the stretch were earned by a Crofts kill, a Mackey putaway from the back row that found the left sideline, and a finishing ace from Melanie Oglesby.
