Jacksonville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints showed a lot of fight Monday on the road at Florida State College-Jacksonville, rallying twice to pull out an 8-7 win over the Bluewave, improving their record to 20-4 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Florida Conference.
FSC-J led 2-1 after three innings, but it wasn't because of lack of chances for SF. The Saints stranded five runners over the first two innings.
Nick Lentz started a rally in the fourth inning with a single and a few batters later Garrett Mathes singled home a run and Andrew Eyster followed with a RBI single to give Santa Fe a 3-2 lead. They would tack two more on in the inning on a passed ball and a RBI single by Cade Westbrook.
FSC-J wasted no time striking back, plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 6-5 in the back and forth game. They added an insurance run in the sixth to make it 7-5.
In the seventh Jarrett Pico came up with a clutch two out triple, scoring a pair of runs to pull the game even at 7-7. Lentz kept the inning going with a two out single, setting the table for Pico.
SF completed the rally in the eighth when sophomore catcher Haydn Cano knocked a two out single to score the would be winning run.
Mathes pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season. Michael Paul, Tyler Jones, and Mathes combined to pitch 3.1 innings of relief, allowing no runs on just two hits. Paul picked up the win and improves to 3-1.
The Saints had 13 hits and now have a team batting average of .310. Mikey Navarrete, Garrett Mathes, Nick Lentz, and Cade Westbrook had two hits each. Jarrett Pico and Westbrook drove in two runs apiece.
