No. 19 Baseball Survives Ninth-Inning Push from FSCJ, 11-10
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 19 Santa Fe Baseball was able to hold off a ninth-inning surge from Florida State College at Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon, getting past the Blue Wave 11-10.
Santa Fe swept all four meetings with FSCJ this season, but this one did not come easily.
Luis Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the first inning scored Armando Albert, but FSCJ was able to tie it at 1-1 in the second with a solo home run.
The score remained tied at 1-1 all the way until the top of the sixth, when SF regained a lead with a two-RBI single from Coy Phillips that brought in Jonathan Logsdon and Rodriguez.
Albert's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning made it 4-1 in favor of the guests, and the lead grew to 7-1 in the eighth after a two RBI single from Zeb Marquis and an RBI single from Santiago Garavito.
FSCJ scored a run in the eighth, but pitcher Carson Pillsbury got the final out of the Blue Wave's at-bats with a fly out.
The Saints' offense continued to flourish in the final innings, and was able to add four more runs in the ninth to establish a healthy 11-2 lead.
FSCJ did not go down without putting a scare into the Saints in the ninth, however.
After two singles and a hit by pitch sandwiched between two walks, the first out was recorded on a sacrifice fly that brought the score to 11-5. Another walk with the bases loaded brought the score to 11-6, and the next batter produced a two-RBI double to cut the Saints' lead to just three, 11-8.
An RBI single brought the score to 11-9, and a Saints' error led to the tenth run. The bases were loaded with just one out, and SF clinging to a 11-10 lead. Eduardo Yepes got just what he needed on the mound, inducing a groundout double play to end the game and keep FSCJ from completing an improbable comeback.
Key Statistics
The Saints totaled 14 hits. Dylan Mock went 4-of-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Logsdon was 3-of-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Zeb Marquis, Garavito, and Phillips each contributed two RBI.
Starter Lance Bolton was the winning pitcher, going 7.1 innings with five hits, two earned runs, no walks, and four strikeouts.
Wiggs' Words
"We didn't show up to play early on. We made simple mistakes and were not locked in. We came alive offensively in the final four innings, which we ended up needing after a tough bottom of the ninth. I think our team learned a valuable lesson today, and hopefully we are better for it going forward."
