
Saints Escape Late Push From Blue Wave
Jacksonville, FL- On Tuesday, the Saints baseball team traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to take on the Florida State College at Jacksonville Blue Wave. Santa Fe comes into this one with an overall record of 21-15. This is the first matchup between the two teams this season.
How it Happened
Pitcher Matthew Jenkins started out on the mound for Santa Fe in this one. Jenkins recorded one strikeout in the first inning before Anthony Scarpino tookover. The first run of the game came at the top of the third inning after a line drive double was hit by Trey Freeman, making the score 2-0 Saints. The Blue Wave scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning after Santa Fe allowed a solo home run. Both teams failed to get any offense going until the top of the seventh when the Saints scored another run off a hard ground ball to right field, which allowed Trey Freeman to score, making it 3-1 Santa Fe. In the eighth inning, a double on a line drive to center field from BJ Graham sent Grant Gallagher home, increasing the lead to 4-1. Great play on the mound from Macklin Miller and Marchelo Biondi led the Saints to the bottom of the ninth without allowing any more runs. Closer Lucas Johns stepped onto the mound in the bottom of the ninth looking to close the game away. The Blue Wave were able to land a line drive into center field which allowed two runners on to score, making it 4-3 with two outs down. With a ball hit short center, second baseman Griffin Sorrow was able to field it and throw the third out, putting this game away.
The Saints win a close one 4-3.
