Gainesville, FL – Daytona State College kept their undefeated Mid-Florida Conference record intact on Saturday afternoon against Santa Fe College, defeating the Saints in a back and forth game, 76-70.
SF (13-9, 1-2 MFC) controlled the action in the early going, leading by as many as seven thanks to their hot shooting and strong rebounding by Brandon Williams. Daytona (16-6, 3-0 MFC) slowly chipped away and took their first lead at the 4:02 mark.
From that point it was back and forth until the 15 minutes left in the game when the Saints took a lead and held it until the 5:29 mark. Wesley Alcegaire and Tanksley Efianayi took over from there, pushing the margin to as many as eight before holding on for the six point win.
Free throws proved to be a big factor in the game. Daytona outscored Santa Fe 22-6 at the charity stripe and took 30 attempts compared to just 11 for SF.
"If we would have done a better job at the free throw line, we would have been in a better position to win this game," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "We missed the front end of two one and ones and missed a few more that we have to make down the stretch. We can't leave points on the floor against a team like Daytona and expect to win."
Michael Sanchez led Santa Fe with 18 points, Morris Marshall had 16 points and five assists, Jaquel Taft finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Allen Baez had 11 points.
The Saints will play a non-conference game on Tuesday, January 27 at home against Pasco-Hernando State college at 7:00 PM.
