
Men's Basketball Concludes Season with Third Win over FSCJ, 71-66
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Santa Fe men's basketball was able to beat Florida State College at Jacksonville for the third time this season, getting past the Blue Wave inside the SF Gymnasium in the season finale on Wednesday evening, 71-66.
First Half – FSCJ 30, SF 28
The Blue Wave were in control in the game's early moments and established an 11-1 lead.
Santa Fe's first basket came on a Jay Medor drive to the hoop with 13:50 on the clock, and the Saints eventually drew to within five, 13-8.
FSCJ, however, began a 14-2 run and held a 27-10 lead with seven minutes to go in the half, forcing a Saints' timeout.
The tide turned dramatically to conclude the half, as Santa Fe worked themselves right back into contention, outscoring FSCJ 18-3 in the last seven minutes to trail by just two points at the break.
Yaw Obeng-Mensah was the driving force of the surge and accounted for nine first half points.
Second Half– SF 71, FSCJ 66
The Saints quickly tied it at 30-30 with a slashing score from Medor, but never could quite gain the upper hand.
That changed after a three-pointer from Bradley Douglas with 14:33 to play that brought the score to 43-40. It was the Saints' first lead since the game's first point, 1-0.
The triple proved to be the start of a 10-2 run from SF, as the hosts built their lead to 50-42 following another three-pointer, this one from Josh Petteno.
A 9-2 run from FSCJ gave the Blue Wave a 53-52 lead, as the clock dwindled down to the seven-minute mark.
The lead changed hands on three occasions as the clock approached five to play, and SF clung to a 59-58 advantage after three free-throws from Hasan Abdul-Hakim.
FSCJ's final lead of the game was at 62-61, after two from the stripe.
Abdul-Hakim canned a go-ahead triple, and after FSCJ tied it at 64-64, the next four points went to SF after consecutive tough finishes in the paint from Medor and Abdul-Hakim.
Santa Fe called a timeout leading 68-64 with 1:41 remaining.
Although FSCJ would later get within two points, 68-66, with 35 seconds to play, Medor made it a four-point game with two clutch makes from the line. After an FSCJ turnover with seven seconds left, Obeng-Mensah added one more free-throw to seal the 71-66 win.
Key Statistics
Santa Fe made eight three-pointers, and guarded the line well to hold the Blue Wave to just one make from beyond the arc.
The Saints went 17-of-24 from the free-throw line and 10-of-12 in the second half.
Four players scored in double-digits, led by 17 from Medor. The sophomore notched double-digit points in 19-of-20 games for the Saints from the point guard position.
Abdul-Hakim finished with 16, 12 of which came in the final 20 minutes of play. Obeng-Mensah added 12 while being a rebounding presence as always, and Douglas had 11.
The Saints concluded the season on a high note with the victory and won four of their final five games down the stretch to finish with a record of 9-11 overall and 6-10 in Central Conference play.
