Softball Gets Past Tallahassee, Extends Winning Streak to Seven
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After beginning the 2021 campaign with an 0-3 record, Santa Fe softball has rattled off wins in their last seven games, with the last two wins coming on Tuesday afternoon against visiting Tallahassee Community College.
GAME 1 – SF 4, TCC 3
Tallahassee opened the game's scoring in the first inning with a run on an RBI single, but Saints' starter Taylor Barrett left three baserunners stranded by concluding the frame with a swinging strikeout.
Santa Fe tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with an RBI double from Ashlyn Rogers to plate Jayelyn Carter.
The Saints then went ahead 3-1 in the second with two more runs. With two outs, Grace Prom drove in two with a double.
The lead grew to 4-1 with an RBI double from Madison Dixon in the bottom of the fourth.
The run production would prove to be all that Santa Fe would need. Although the Eagles scored two runs in the sixth inning of Barrett, the Saints' quality pitching and defense secured the win.
Barrett earned her third consecutive win in the circle for the Saints. The freshman threw six innings while allowing seven hits, three earned runs, and four walks. It was the third consecutive game where Barrett notched double-digit strikeouts, finishing with ten. Gabrielle Mathre picked up the save in her first appearance of the season for Santa Fe, allowing just one Eagles hit in the top of the seventh while striking out two.
Santa Fe finished with ten hits offensively, led by Story Giebeig's 3-of-3 performance. Prom had two RBI, Dixon added one, and Rogers had two hits and an RBI as well.
GAME 2 - SF 3, TCC 1
The Saints used two runs in the first inning to jump out to the 2-0 advantage. Prom and Giebeig each had RBI two-baggers in the frame.
Tallahassee cut their deficit in half with one run off the Saints starter Mathre, but Mathre limited the damage by inducing a groundout to end the inning.
Cris'Deona Beasley replaced Mathre to throw the final four innings, and Giebeig's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning was the game's final tally in the 3-1 win.
Beasley, the reigning FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Pitcher of the Week, held the Eagles off the scoreboard over the final four frames to earn the win. She allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out three.
Prom and Rogers each had multi-hit performances, as Santa Fe finished with eight hits. Giebeig drove in two runs batting fifth in the order.
Fico's Focus
"I am proud of Gabrielle Mathre and how she handled herself in the circle during her first outing this season," stated Head Coach Lindsay Fico. "She is a true competitor and brings a lot of passion to both our dugout and to the field when she is throwing."
"It was nice to see our bench compete as well. We started a few new faces in the second game and they were up for the challenge. From the many clutch defensive plays to the overall attitude...it was impressive to watch! Grace Prom was on fire at the plate. She was the difference maker offensively for us and had a few clutch hits to score runs when we needed them."
