Softball's Bats Go Cold in Losses at Daytona State College
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Santa Fe Softball was on the road at Daytona State for their final road trip of the regular season. The host Falcons were anything but hospitable as they got the sweep, both in run-rule fashion, 10-2 and 12-1.
Game 1 DSC 10, SF 2 (6 Inn.)
Seven of the 10 runs the Falcons scored came by way of the long ball. The Falcons got the game going by slamming a three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning.
After going scoreless in the first inning, the Saints got on the board after a Grace Prom two-run bomb to center, making it 3-2 in favor of the Falcons. That would be the only SF runs of the game and as close as it would get, as the Saints stranded 11 baserunners.
The bottom of the second saw yet another Falcons two-run blast, making it 5-2.
The Falcons added two more runs in their half of the third after loading the bases. One run came after a hit batter and the other was walked in. After three, the Falcons would lead 7-2.
The Saints had an opportunity in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out, but the Falcon's defense stiffened and kept the Saints from closing the five-run gap.
The Falcons would add one last two-run homer for good measure in the sixth. The game was called after the Falcons brought across their tenth run of the day, giving them the 10-2 victory.
Key Statistics
Prom accounted for three of the five Saints hits and had the only two RBI of the game. Prom was a triple shy of hitting for a cycle as she reached on all of her at bats.
Neely Peterson, the Region 8 Player of the Week, and Riley Schnyder accounted for the only two other hits for the Saints.
Cris'Deona Beasley was able to sit seven Falcon's batters down but was charged with the loss.
Game 2 DSC 12, SF 1
The Falcons picked up where they left off in game one, as they tallied the first six runs of the game.
The first and only real threat the Saints would pose would come in the fourth after Peterson hit a lead-off double. Ashlyn Rogers followed up with a single to move Peterson to third. Morgan Lebeda grounded out but moved the base runners and got credited for an RBI, as she brought in Peterson to put the Saints on the board. Santa Fe left the bases loaded, and after four innings of play, the Falcons led 6-1.
The Falcons tacked on six more runs in the fourth, making it 12-1.
The Saints would try to get a last rally going in the fifth. Peterson hit a single to get the Saints started, followed by Rogers being hit by a pitch. A wild pitch would advance the runners, but the game would end with a strikeout as the Falcons completed the sweep with another run-rule game, 12-1.
Key Statistics
Lebeda tallied the Saints only RBI. Peterson was 2-of-3 with a single and double.
Taylor Barrett was charged with the loss in the circle.
