LONGWOOD, Fla. – Santa Fe Softball participated in the Courtney Miller Invitational on Saturday and came away with the season's second win over Polk State College before falling to the defending national champion and No. 1 Florida Southwestern State College.
GAME 1 - SF 12, POLK 9
The Saints fell behind 4-0 but put up seven runs in the bottom of the third to go in front for the first time.
SF batted around in the big inning, which included four doubles and a triple.
The Eagles drew to within 7-6 in the top of the fourth, but the Saints used another big inning in the sixth to take a 12-6 lead. The five-run frame was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Abrianna Hickox.
The game tying run was able to be brought up in the seventh inning by the Eagles, but Kaylie Araujo got the final out with a lineout to Abbigail Heywood.
Key Statistics
The Saints' 12 runs came on 11 hits. Olivia Larkin from the leadoff spot had three of them, with one being a double. Hickox, Ayanna Woodard, and Riley Schnyder each had doubles, while Keeli Zingaro tripled. Hickox led the team with three RBI.
Sophie Abrams was the winning pitcher in six innings of work, while Araujo got the final three outs in the seventh.
GAME 2 - No. 1 FSW 14, SF 6 (5 INN.)
The nations' top-ranked team pounced on the Saints early, bringing across nine runs in the first inning.
Santa Fe's offense was able to produce, but not at a clip that could keep up with the Bucs in a run-ruled, five inning contest. FSW scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to walk it off and reach the eight-run advantage through five.
Key Statistics
Araujo took her first loss from the circle, while Calen Hayes and Sophie Abrams also threw in the defeat.
The Saints had nine hits, with multi-hit efforts from Jayelyn Carter, Zingaro, and Story Giebeig. Zingaro had a team-high three RBI with a double and a home run, her fourth of the season.
