
#16 Ranked Saints Sweep Another Conference Opponent
Gainesville, FL - The Santa Fe Saints took on the St. Petersburg College Titans on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader. The Saints swept the Titans by winning with a walk-off double by Sydney Fowler in Game 1 and winning Game 2 by run rule 12-1.
How It Happened
Game 1
First Inning
Mallory Forrester started in the circle for Santa Fe. She started hot with a strikeout against Paige Bankston. After that, she walked Kelly Tikel, which brought up Ayla Horne. Horne hit a two-run homer to give the Titans a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first. Heading into the bottom of the inning, the Saints found themselves trailing early. Kassidy Goodpaster, sophomore from Deltona, Florida, was the starting pitcher for the Titans and looked to keep her team ahead. Leadoff hitter Sydney Fowler had a double to start off. After two walks and a single by fielder's choice, the Saints had bases loaded with two outs. Alexis Daphney hit a ground ball to first base, which led to the third and final out of the inning. Score after one: 2-0 Titans.
Second Inning
There was great defense in the top of the second by the Saints. Behind two strikeouts from Forrester, the Titans went three up three down. The Saints had a leadoff walk with Karris Rhine, but the next two batters got out. This brought back the top of the lineup with Sydney Fowler. She hit a single and advanced Rhine to third. A walk by Kamaya Cohen led to bases loaded with two outs. This time the Saints took advantage, as Ariana Wright hit a two-run single followed by an RBI single by Madi Conway, giving them a 3-2 lead. Score after two: 3-2 Saints.
Third Inning
It was a defensive inning in the third. For the Saints, Forrester only faced four batters. Alyssa Filmer popped out to center field and then Kelly Tikel walked. Ayla Horne had the two-run homer in the first, but could not get on as she grounded out into a double play to end the top of the third. The Saints went three up three down after two pop ups and a groundout. Score after three: 3-2 Saints.
Fourth Inning
The Saints contninued to hold the Titans at bay defensively in the top of the fourth. Forrester struck out both Ella Carroll and Brianna Lyall, and then her defense handled a groundout by Paige Bankston. While batting, the Saints had runners in scoring position but could not convert. They left runners on second and third. Score after four: 3-2 Saints.
Fifth Inning
The Saints got a quick out when Emily Pearce popped up to the pitcher but got into a little trouble after that. Forrester walked two consecutive batters, which brought up home run hitter, Ayla Horne, with runners on first and second. The Saints made a pitching change and brought in freshman Peyton Bass. Horne hit an RBI single to even the score 3-3. A hit by Paige Bankston brought in Kelly Tikel, who got on from a walk, and gave the Titans a 4-3 lead. The Saints had two hard hits but were caught in the outfield to give the Titans two outs quickly. Jayla Clark walked and after a quick break to check out Goodpaster's hand, Anna Burnside was up to bat. Burnside was walked and then Aliana Mercado struck out to end the fifth. Score after five: 4-3 Titans.
Sixth Inning
Bass gave up a single to Briana Lyall and was pulled from the mound. Sydney Fowler came in to be the third pitcher of the game for the Saints. Natalia Alverez had a sacrifice bunt that moved Lyall to second. After that, third baseman Juliann Smith had two consecutive outs to get the Saints out of the inning. Sydney Fowler ledoff the bottom of the sixth for the Saints. She hit a flyout to right field that forced the right fielder to make a diving catch for the out. Kamaya Cohen had a hard hit down the first base line that took a hop over the first baseman. She collided with the second baseman and had to stay at first. Madi Conway hit out to center for the third out. Score after six: 4-3 Titans.
Seventh Inning
The Saints did what they needed to do in the top of the seventh to give themselves a chance. Defense handled a groundout, a line drive and strikeout by Fowler to head into the bottom of the seventh down one run. Juliann Smith had a leadoff single followed up a pop up and a strikeout. Gabrial Miles was up to bat to try and keep the Saints' hopes alive. Miles walked and brought up Aliana Mercado, who also walked. Bases were loaded with two outs in bottom of the seventh. Sydney Fowler hit a two-run double to end the game 6-4.
It was a clean game as there was only one error by the Titans and none for the Saints. The final score was 6-4.
Game 2
First Inning
Ryleigh Bauer was the starting pitcher for Game 2. After a leadoff walk, she struck out the next three to keep the Titans scoreless after one. Leadoff batter for the Saints, Sydney Fowler, had three hits in the opening game but grounded out at her first at bat of Game 2. The Saints got their first baserunner when Kamaya Cohen walked. Madi Conway hit a three-run homer off Titans starting pitcher Nia Fisher. After the home run, the Titans quickly made a pitching change, bringing in Mariade Los Angeles Fory. A pair of walks and a single led to bases loaded and Aliana Mercado up to bat with only one out. She hit a two-run double to increase the score to 5-0. The Saints batted around as leadoff hitter Sydney Fowler got up again. Fowler walked and then Cohen popped up to left field to end the inning. Score after one: 5-0 Saints.
Second Inning
It was a quick and clean defensive inning for the Saints as the Titans went three up three down. Ariana Wright ledoff the Saints with a home run to extend the lead to 6-0. Juliann Smith hit a two-run inside-the-park home run and hit in Madi Conway, who reached on an error. The lead pushed to 8-0 in the bottom of the second with no outs. The Titans entered a new pitcher, freshman Leny Hoyas from Medellin, Colombia. The homers continued as Alexis Daphney hit one to right field to increase the lead to 9-0 with no outs. A pair of walks and a single led to bases loaded and Sydney Fowler up to bat. The original starter for the Titans, Nia Fisher, re-entered the game. Fowler popped it to left field for an out but did have an RBI. Score after two: 11-0 Saints.
Third Inning
The Titans got on the board behind an RBI double from Alyssa Filmer. Heading into the bottom of the third, the score was 11-1. It was a good defensive inning for the Titans as the Saints went three up three down. Score after three: 11-1.
Fourth Inning
The Saints stayed strong defensively in the fourth and allowed no runs and only one hit. Kamaya Cohen had an RBI single to give the Saints their own run of the inning. Score after four: 12-1.
Fifth Inning
The Saints continued their dominant performance in Game 2 as they easily got the three outs needed to end the game in a run rule 12-1.
