Women’s Basketball Drops Game at Indian River, 70-57
FORT PIERCE, Fla. – After two previous losses, Indian River State College got the better of Santa Fe Women's Basketball in the season's third and final matchup, taking a 70-57 victory over the Saints.
First Quarter – IRSC 18, SF 5
SF started off slow in the opening period and had ten turnovers in the early going while being held to just 2-of-14 from the field.
Second Quarter – IRSC 36, SF 18
Malea Brown had seven points in the quarter, but the deficit grew to 18 after the game's first 20 minutes.
Third Quarter – IRSC 45, SF 41
SF trailed by as many as 21 when the Pioneers converted on a three-point try to open the second half scoring, but the Saints were prepared to make a surge.
A 22-2 run from the Saints brought them to within a single point, 41-40, with just 42 seconds in the quarter.
The Saints held Indian River scoreless for over a five-minute stretch by clenching down on defense, and also were able to hit two attempts from beyond the arc in the stretch of play, one from Brown and another from Selah Reddick.
Fourth Quarter – IRSC 70, SF 57
A basket inside from Aleisha Curry once again made it a one-point game, 45-44, with 8:25 on the clock.
SF still trailed by one, 47-46, when the Pioneers started a 11-0 run to claim a 58-46 advantage with just 4:03 remaining.
Despite their best efforts to extend the game from that point forward, SF was never able to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way in the road defeat.
Key Statistics
The Saints had a healthy advantage in the rebounding category, 54-36, but couldn't make the most of enough second-chance opportunities.
14 of 19 field goals came off assists, but the Saints turned the ball over on 25 occasions in the loss.
Curry paced the Saints with yet another double-double, tallying 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 8-of-12 from the line, to go along with 11 rebounds. It was her eighth double-double on the year and third straight.
Brown was the only other Saint in double-figures, contributing 15 points and nine rebounds. Her backcourt mate Taniah Bowers also hit the glass for nine rebounds.
