The Lakehawks actually struck first on Monday, plating two in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by Austin Mauer. Santa Fe catcher Matt Allen tied the score in the bottom of the first with a monster homerun to left field, his second of the season. Hugo Valdes gave the Saints the lead two batters later with a RBI double.
Santa Fe added a run to their lead in the bottom of the second, and scored another run in the fourth for a 5-2 lead. They broke the game open in the seventh thanks to a crucial two run error by LSSC, pushing the margin to 8-2.
Lake Sumter hit a solo homerun in the eighth but would get no closer as Bailey Metcalf (2.0 innings, 5 K, 0 ER) finished off the game with two scoreless innings in relief of Ricky Miranda (3.1 innings, 4 K, 1 ER). Metcalf ended the game in exciting fashion by striking out the side in the ninth, allowing just a single along the way. Robert Girgis started and tossed 3.2 innings.
"We got a big two run homerun run from Matt Allen early on to get us back in the game after giving up a couple in the first," said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. "Miranda and Metcalf did a great job out of the bullpen holding their hitters in check."
Brandon Hernandez and Cole Parks finished with two hits each for the Saints and Allen was 1-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI.
Santa Fe will continue against Lake Sumter on Wednesday in Leesburg at 3:00 PM.
