SAINTS LOSE DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE TO GULF COAST, 59-55
Marianna, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (8-5) staked themselves to a 26-19 halftime lead over Gulf Coast State College Saturday afternoon at the Panhandle Shootout in Marianna thanks to an 18-2 run, but couldn't hang on down the stretch, falling to the Commodores 59-55.
Gulf Coast clawed their way back in the game and took their first lead 43-42 with six minutes to play. The Commodores held their lead and made it three at 53-50 with just over a minute to go before Allen Baez nailed a three pointer to tie the score at 53-53.
GC retook the lead on an offensive rebound put back, also drawing the foul to make it a three point play, helping seal the victory.
Morris Marshall finished with 13 points, and Allen Baez had 21 points including 12-of-13 at the foul line.
"I thought we defended well, but just not good enough down the stretch," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "Our guys played hard but made too many mental errors. We will learn from it and use these last two games to get better."
Next up for SF is the Florida Colleges Shootout in Gainesville December 13 and 14. On Saturday, December 13 they will battle Miami Dade at 11:00 AM, and on Sunday will take on Broward College at 1:00 PM. Both games will be live on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints
