Saints Streak Snapped by HCC Hawks
The Hillsborough CC Hawks were determined not to let history repeat itself when they came to Gainesville Saturday afternoon. After blowing a 16-point second half lead in a game the Saints won in Tampa 71-68 on November 14, the Hawks were able to fend off all SF attempts at a repeat performance and come away with a 64-59 win. "We turned it over a lot and when we didn't we made poor decisions regarding our shot selection," said SF head Coach Chris Mowry. "Hillsborough did a nice job today and we didn't. They deserved to win today."
The Hawks (7-3) led most of the game, but never were able to stretch it to double figures. HCC scored the final six points of the opening half to take a 37-29 lead at the break. "They did a good job of closing out the first half, said Mowry. "We are not playing with good chemistry right now and it showed at some key times during the game today."
The Saints (8-3) had multiple opportunities in the second half to overtake the deficit, but were turned back time and time again. The Saints made just four of 18, 3-pointers (.222) which made the difference in a five-point loss.
"If we a make a couple more of them or if we make different decisions about settling for perimeter shots it could have been a different outcome," said Mowry.
John Mason led the Saints with 11 points while Isaiah Islam scored 10.
The loss ended the Saints seven-game winning streak and they will now travel to Bradenton on Tuesday for a game against State College of Florida scheduled to tip off at 7 pm.
