Saints Fall to Polk State College
Saints men's basketball team could not take down the Polk State College Eagles and lost 92-81 at home Wednesday, December 4.
Active hands with tight defense by the Eagles made for contested Saint shots. The first 20 minutes saw the Saints struggle offensively as Polk went on a 17-5 run. Facing a 17-point deficit, the Saints fought back in the last 3:27 of the first half to get within 10 points of Polk, 34-44.
The majority of the second half continued in favor of the Eagles. Trying their best to chip away at the lead, the Saints had an offensive spark on Yaw Obeng-Mensah scoring all the Saints' points in a 15-5 Santa Fe run. With the run bringing the Saints within striking distance of the lead at 56-63, Polk State called time-out to regroup.
Coming out of the time-out, the Eagles knocked in more points to increase the lead until Ryan Leonard stepped in with his own run fueled by crucial free throws and a two-pointer and brought the Saints within five points once more with just over four and a half minutes left in the game.
The 70-75 score with the Saints down five points were as close as they would get before the Eagles closed out the game for good.
Obeng-Mensah lead all scorers with 28 points on the night, coupled with nine rebounds. Saints teammate Leonard added 20 points, while Luka Filipovic contributed 12 points.
The Saints (6-5, 0-0 MFC) travel to State College of Florida, Sarasota-Manatee for a 4 p.m. game Saturday, December 7.
