Saints Fall Short at Daytona in 80-73 Loss
Saints men's basketball were unable to stop the Daytona State College Falcons and fell 80-73 Wednesday, February 12.
A barrage of offense from the Falcons, including hitting three-pointers put the Saints down 43-27 after the first half.
Regrouping and preparing for a tough climb out of the hole was needed for the Saints as they took the floor in the second half and worked like crazy, chipping away steadily at the lead and eventually cutting the deficit to four points in the final minute.
Unfortunately, the Saints just couldn't swipe the win as Daytona held on until the final buzzer.
Saints head coach Chris Mowry stated, "Daytona was really good on offense the first half at the same time we struggled to make any shots, shooting 28 percent from the field." He continued, "In the second (half), we pressed and scrambled to try to get back in the game but couldn't get over the hump."
Size was a factor all night that put the Saints in a difficult position of taking on a bigger Falcon team that created a 48-24 rebound margin between the two teams.
"Their size allowed them to dominate the rebound battle, which gave them a 10-point advantage in second-chance points, but I'm really proud of our effort as we fought back in the game and will continue to battle the next time we play," Mowry added.
Guards Dejuon Small and Josiah Tynes led the Saints with 20 and 19 points respectively. Small also added six assists. Ricardo Jackson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
The Saints (10-17, 2-8 MFC) return to the SF gym for their final home game of the season for another conference matchup against Eastern Florida State College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 19.
