Men's Basketball Stunned in Double Overtime by Daytona State, 102-93
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Santa Fe men's basketball came up short in the season's first overtime game of the season, as visiting Daytona State outlasted the Saints, 102-93 after two overtime periods.
The game was full of twists and turns, with each team holding double-digit leads in regulation.
FIRST HALF - DSC 41, SF 33
The Falcons held a 26-16 lead after the game's first ten minutes, but Santa Fe went on a 15-5 run to tie it up at 31-31 as the clock hit 5:00. Josh Petteno canned three of his four first-half triples during the run, keeping Santa Fe close.
Daytona State, however, ended the half with a flurry and held the 41-33 advantage at the halftime whistle.
SECOND HALF - DSC 73, SF 73
After the Falcon's started the scoring in the second half, Santa Fe took control with a remarkable 22-2 run, which included 15 unanswered points. The run concluded with about 12 minutes left in regulation, when Jay Medor sunk a thtee-pointer to bring the score to 55-45.
Although the Daytona State offense started to come alive, the Saints' lead was still three, 70-67, as the clock reached one minute.
After a missed Falcons' three-pointer, Medor was fouled and hit both from the stripe, handing the Saints a 72-67 lead with 13 seconds left.
Daytona State capitalized on an old-fashioned three-point play the next trip down with just seven seconds left, bringing the score to 72-70.
Fouled with five seconds on the clock, Hasan Abdul-Hakim made his first free-throw but missed the second. The Falcons grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court, shocking Santa Fe with a leaning three-pointer to tie it at the buzzer, 73-73.
OT 1 - DSC 82, SF 82
Both offenses were humming in the first extra period, going back and forth. Daytona State held an 80-79 edge after a basket and the foul with 1:20 on the clock.
On the ensuing possession, however, Yaw Obeng-Mensah found the bottom of the net with a jumper, making it 81-80 in favor of the Saints. Daytona State countered with a basket of their own to go in front, then Obeng-Mensah knotted it up at 82-82 by splitting a pair of free-throws with about 23 seconds left on the clock.
The Falcons tried to win it with the last shot, but Obeng-Mensah swatted a driving layup attempt with about five seconds left, and although Santa Fe corralled the loose ball and advanced up the court, the Saints ran out of time to get up an attempt at the basket.
Seven of the Saints' nine points in the session were netted by Obeng-Mensah, but the two teams went to another five-minute overtime session.
OT 2 - DSC 102, SF 93
The Falcons gained the upper hand and some separation by scoring seven of the first nine points to lead 89-84 about halfway through.
With the Falcons' lead still at five moments later, Bradley Douglas sunk a three-pointer to make it a one-possession gain, but Daytona State responded on the other end with a stepback-triple of their own to bring the score to 94-89.
After an empty possession for Santa Fe as the clock dwindled under a minute, the Saints were forced to start fouling.
Daytona State took care of the ball and hit from the free-throw line down the stretch to preserve the tightly-contested road win in Central Conference play, 102-93.
Obeng-Mensah led Santa Fe with a career-high 30 points, 13 of which came in the overtime periods.
Medor opoured in 16 points while extending his streak of double-digit scoring efforts to nine games. 15 of Medor's points came in the second half as he spearheaded the Saints' big second half run.
Douglas finished with 20 points, while Petteno had a season-high 14 points on the strength of his four first-half triples.
A Moment with Mowry
"I'm really proud of our effort today," said Head Coach Chris Mowry. "I thought Daytona State was fantastic offensively, and we really struggled to stop them in the first half. Josh (Petteno) hitting four threes kept it close at the half."
"We did a great job coming out of the locker room getting stops and scoring in transition, putting us in position to get a win. We hurt ourselves late with some missed free throws, and not being ready to defend with five seconds left in regulation. Daytona hit the last second three-pointer to go to overtime, where we continued to battle back and forth, getting a huge stop on defense to go to a second OT. Credit to Daytona for not giving in when we made our run to start the second half, and finding a way to win the game. We are 2-3 in conference, and all three losses were winnable games with under a minute to go. We have to continue to learn and grow from these experiences, and get ready for four straight road games, starting Wednesday at St. Petersburg."
