Saints Survive Against Mont Sports Academy 83-81 in Season Opener
Macius Trowe and Ashton Lovette lead the Saints in a comeback second-half win. Trowe made 7/8 free throws and Lovette scored 14 points with 3 second-half three-pointers.
The Saints won 4 of their final 5 games last season to finish with a 17-12 record. Entering his 21st season at Santa Fe, Head Coach Chris Mowry said "the team has been working hard in practice to prepare for a successful year! We have a deep roster, with competition for playing time at every position. Having lost our top 8 scorers from last year, there is an opportunity for everyone to step in and contribute."
Led by Mustafa Kassan and Malik Raines, Mont Sports Academy was on fire in the first half. Kassan and Raines made 4 threes each as Mont took a 37-33 halftime lead.
Returner Macius Trowe and transfer Ashton Lovette from Davis & Elkins made the most of their opportunity to step in and contribute. Trowe made 7/8 free throws and Lovette scored 14 points with 3 second-half three-pointers as the Saints won 83-81. Trowe also lead the team in rebounding with 9 boards (3 offensive) and made the game winning reverse layup with 0.4 seconds. Multiple players recorded 2 steals, including returner Jonathan Renois, Freshman Tynan Becker, and transfer Ashton Lovette. Kevin Pazmino and Tynan Becker each scored double digit points as well, with Pazmino making 3 threes and Becker making some aggresive layups and dunks.
