Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints turned their defensive pressure up a notch on Saturday afternoon, holding Indian River State College to 31% shooting from the field in a 66-56 win over the Pioneers.
Leo Edwards provided a spark for the Saints off the bench, and appeared to be nearing full strength after sitting out the entire week of practice. He finished with a game high 16 points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots.
Santa Fe (5-4) controlled the pace most of the game, and never trailed after the 6:46 mark of the first half. The Saints led by 11 with two minutes to go in the first period, but two baskets by the Pioneers in the closing seconds made it a 28-21 lead at the break for SF.
Indian River would fight back to tie the game midway through the second half, but would never take the lead as the Saints pulled away down the stretch, making 14-of-17 free throws in the final period, to defeat the Pioneers by 10.
Saints leading scorer Alex Brown finished right on his season average of 15 points, and Ty Birts had 11 points and eight rebounds. Birts also blanketed IRSC's leading scorer Melton Sanders (23 ppg), holding him to just three points on 1-for-13 shooting.
Santa Fe will hit the road on Tuesday, November 24 for a game at Polk State College at 7:00 PM.
