Women's Basketball Downed in Home Opener by Miami Dade
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Miami Dade was the opponent for Santa Fe women's basketball in the 2021 home opener, and the visiting Sharks were in control throughout to hand the Saints a 95-40 defeat.
Lauren Carmona opened the game's scoring with a triple, but soon after with the Saints trailing 6-5, the Sharks ended the quarter on a 17-0 run to jump ahead 23-5.
At the start of the second quarter, Miami Dade extended the run to 24 unanswered points, and led 30-5 before Carmona canned another three-pointer.
The damage had been done, however, and although the Saints' offense eventually started to find a little more success, the Sharks dictated play on the inside and in transition to spoil the season's first game for Santa Fe inside the SF Gymnasium.
Carmona led Santa Fe offensively with 11 points and converted on three of the team's six three-pointers. Andrea Torres added seven points, while seven other Saints found their way into the scoring column as well.
Coach Stebbins' Take
"It was a tough game tonight, and we struggled to hit shots," said Head Coach Chanda Stebbins. "We get the opportunity to try and be better tomorrow against Palm Beach State College."
