Women's Basketball Has Three All-Conference Honorees
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Santa Fe women's basketball had three student-athletes named to the All-Central Conference team, with Zoé Alexander and Jasani Buchanan landing on the First Team and Lauren Carmona on the Second Team.
"I am happy for each of these young women for the work they put in this year and the results they achieved," noted Head Coach Chanda Stebbins.
The complete list of Central Conference award winners is included at the conclusion of this release. Domenica Zamora of St. Petersburg College was named the Player of the Year, while Denisha Davidson of St. Petersburg took home Coach of the Year.
Zoé Alexander, Central Conference First Team
Alexander, a sophomore from Orlando, Fla. and Dr. Phillips High School, claimed First Team honors in the Central Conference after claiming Second Team Mid-Florida Conference honors in 2019-2020.
Alexander led Santa Fe with 11.7 points per game. No. 10 also ranked second on the team in rebounds per game (5.7) and first in assists per game (2.9).
The guard started in 19 of the Saints' 20 games, putting up double-digit scoring efforts on 11 occasions.
She recorded three double-doubles on the season in points and rebounds. Her season-high totals in each of those two categories came in a game at Florida State College at Jacksonville on Feb. 24, when she notched a career-high with 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Alexander was also instrumental in Santa Fe's 69-65 road win at No. 20 St. Petersburg, contributing 24 points and ten rebounds.
Coach Stebbins: "Zoe really carried us all year in how hard she drove to the basket and created for others. I am glad to see her receive this recognition."
Jasani Buchanan, Central Conference First Team
Buchanan, the sophomore transfer from Florida SouthWestern State College and native of Decatur, Ga., contributed in a variety of different ways for the Saints.
In addition to ranking second on the team with 11.1 points per game, the 5'8" guard ranked No. 3 in the FCSAA with 9.7 rebounds per game and No. 5 in blocks per game (1.5), leading SF in each category. She also tied for the team lead in steals per game (1.9), alongside Taniah Bowers.
Defensively, Buchanan recorded a steal in all but two of her 19 games played, and at least one block in all but four outings.
Buchanan was chosen as the Region 8 Player of the Week on March 9, recognized for her play from March 1 to March 7. For the week in the Saints' three games, she averaged 12.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.3 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game.
On the season, No. 1 amassed six double-doubles. Her season-high totals in her first season at SF included 23 points against Indian River State College on March 10 and 18 rebounds against Florida State College at Jacksonville on March 3.
Coach Stebbins: "Jasani was a ball hawk for us on the glass this year. She always found ways to get rebounds and that made a big difference for us since we were undersized."
Lauren Carmona, Central Conference Second Team
The sophomore from Cooper City, Fla. and Archbishop McCarthy High School contributed 8.1 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Saints.
The 6'0" wing player played in 18 games, starting in 17. Carmona tied for the team lead in three-pointers made on the season, sinking 30. She recorded at least one three-pointer in 16-of-18 games played.
Carmona put in a season-high 16 points on two occasions, at St. Petersburg College on Feb. 27 and against Hillsborough Community College on March 12. Her new career-high in the rebounding category was set on March 3 against FSCJ, when she snagged 14.
Coach Stebbins: "Lauren did a little bit of us everything for us. She was probably one of our quickest triggers and could knock down solid shots for us and get some rebounds."
