Saints Toppled by Hawks
The Saints blow a three point half time lead to lose by fourteen.
Gainesville, FL ---
How It Happened
The Santa Fe Saints women's basketball jumped out early to a solid lead against the Hillsborough Hawks Saturday afternoon. The Saints led after the first quarter 26-19. Leyah Houston was four of seven from the field in the first quarter and Camryn Robinson was three for three to start the game giving the Saints a fast start. Hillsoborough battled back in the second quarter to even the game at 29 forcing a time out by Santa Fe with about six and half minutes to go in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets from there and Gainesville product, Ta"Niya Walker, gave the Saints five rebounds in the second quarter. The Saints went to half time up by three.
Santa Fe came out of the locker room a little bit cold and got outscored 7 to 24 points in the third quarter and seemed to never recover. The Saints only made one third quarter basket and had eleven third quarter turnovers. The combination of turnovers and cold shooting deflated the Saints who allowed multiple Hawks to get hot in third quarter. The Hawks led after three quarters by 14 points, 60-46. The Hawks didn't let up the rest of the way as they outscored the Saints by two in the fourth quarter as well. The final margin of 58-74 gave the Hillsborough Community College Hawks a commanding position in the Citrus Conference.
The Saints had previously split with Hillsborough who is currently sitting in second place in the Citrus Conference. The Saints now slip to sixth place, one game behind Daytona for the fifth place position with four conference games to go. Santa Fe was led by Houston's 15 points and 7 rebounds. Shakiria Chaney chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds and Camryn Robinson rounded out the Saints in double figures with 11 points as well. The Saints will have a week to recover and go to Florida SouthWestern who currently sits in a log jam for third place in the Citrus on Saturday.
Quote From Coach Jackson
"We didn't get the result that we had hoped for today. We played a solid first half, bu twe weren't able to maintain that same intensity in the second half. We will continue to learn and attempt to make the necessary adjustments to right the ship."
